The Chinese Grand Prix is now just days away as the 2024 F1 season returns for its fifth round. Max Verstappen is the unsurprising Drivers’ Championship leader with the nearest non-Red Bull driver 18 points off the Dutchman who is chasing a fourth successive world title.

F1 has not raced at the Shanghai International Circuit since 2019 but returns this year with the event due to host the first sprint race of the season on Saturday. World champion Verstappen isn’t delighted about the plan, however.

“I think it’s not great, let’s say like that, to do that. Because when you have been away from a track for quite a while, I think you never know what you’re going to experience, right? So it would have been better to have a normal race weekend there.

“But on the other hand, it probably spices things up a bit more, and that’s maybe what they would like to see. But yeah, purely from a driving perspective, performance perspective of the sport, I think it’s not the smartest thing to do. We’ll see what we get there.”
