Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta has shared heartfelt advice with longtime teammate Lionel Messi, emphasizing the importance of making the most of his remaining playing days.
In an interview with Relevo, following his recent retirement, Iniesta reflected on his conversation with Messi. “I tell them to make the most of the time they’re playing because it’s the best part. The rest is cool, but it’s different,” Iniesta said.
The 40-year-old midfielder, who spent 16 years at Barcelona, won 24 major honors, including the 2010 World Cup with Spain. Iniesta’s decision to retire comes after a five-year stint with Vissel Kobe and a season with Emirates in the UAE Pro League.
Messi, 37, is currently leading Inter Miami to success, breaking records and guiding Argentina to World Cup and Copa America triumphs. However, Iniesta’s words serve as a reminder that Messi’s playing days are numbered.
“I hope [Messi and Sergio Busquets] will be around for a long time,” Iniesta added. “When you see people retiring, you realize that it’s your turn soon.”
The pair’s storied partnership at Barcelona yielded nine La Liga titles and four Champions League victories. Messi paid tribute to Iniesta on social media, praising his “magic” and wishing him the best.
Iniesta, now retired, confessed that the demands of being a professional footballer had taken its toll. “Lately, everything that surrounds being a footballer is what ends up wearing you down… I am very, very, very calm” about his decision.
