Mercedes ‘hire private investigators’ with F1 side furious at allegations Lewis Hamilton is being ‘sabotaged’

Mercedes have reportedly hired private investigators as they continue to fume over anonymous email and SMS messages that claimed Lewis Hamilton is being ‘sabotaged’.

The 39-year-old is leaving the Silver Arrows at the end of the season, having confirmed he’d be leaving for F1 rivals Ferrari.

Anonymous messages and emails recently claimed Hamilton was being punished by Mercedes as a result, with Toto Wolff also accused of favouring team-mate George Russell.

The email, purported to be from a Mercedes team member, said Hamilton was being given cold tyres. It was accompanied with the subject title: “A potnetial death warrant for Lewis.”

They said a ‘scorned’ Wolff was favouring Russell, who has enjoyed a positive season so far.

Northampton Police have said no crime has been committed after the F1 side reported the matter to the authorities.

“Northamptonshire Police received a report on June 12 regarding an email that had been circulated within the Mercedes AMG F1 team,” they said on Tuesday.

“No criminal offences were found to have been committed.

“However, advice was given regarding any further emails the team may receive.”

But the Daily Mail say they simply won’t ‘let the matter lie’.

A spokesman says Mercedes have outsourced the subject to a firm that specialises in this kind of investigation.

“It is being dealt with externally,” the spokesman was quoted as saying.

Wolff has admitted he’s unhappy with the allegations, while also denying they were from a member of the team.

“It is not from a member of the team,” said the Austrian.
