Rory McIlroy Sells £2 Million Dream Mansion as PGA Tour Success Leads to U.S. Move
Rory McIlroy, one of golf’s biggest stars, was compelled to part with his dream home in Northern Ireland in 2013 after spending more time on the PGA Tour. The Northern Irishman sold the mansion for just under £2 million, a property that included a state-of-the-art golf practice area, a dream feature for any golf enthusiast.
The mansion, built in 2006 in his hometown of Holywood, was a sprawling estate spanning 14 acres, featuring a gym, tennis court, driving range, and an expansive practice area. McIlroy turned professional in 2007 and joined the PGA Tour three years later, which ultimately led to his decision to relocate to the United States full-time as his career took off.
In 2012, McIlroy put the Holywood property on the market and sold it the following year to former TV presenter Gary McCausland for less than the £2 million asking price. McCausland called the estate “an amazing place” and couldn’t resist the opportunity to purchase it.

At the time, McIlroy was already a two-time major champion and continued to solidify his legacy, winning both the PGA Championship and The Open in 2014. Although he may have missed his Northern Irish retreat, his new residence in Palm Beach, Florida, worth more than three times the Holywood property. likely softened the blow. In 2019, McIlroy also purchased a mansion in California, further cementing his stateside lifestyle.
Discussing his preference for living in the U.S., McIlroy remarked, “My life is here. I have an American wife, and I live in America. Honestly, I enjoy it here more than the weather, the convenience, the way of life is easier.”
McIlroy’s success, both on and off the course, has been undeniable. Ranked 13th in The Sunday Times Rich List of the 40 wealthiest people under 40, his fortune continues to grow.
