Scottie Scheffler’s Poise Outshines: Bubba Watson’s Tensions with Caddie Ted Scott Expose Attitude Flaws

As much as the 2024 season was a success for Scottie Scheffler, it was also a booming year for his caddie Ted Scott. The veteran looper has been in the business for 24 years and has seen the good, the bad, and the worst sides of a pro. Currently, he is caddying for Scheffler and will complete 3 years with the world no. 1 as his bagman. But before that, Scott was an employee of Bubba Watson for 15 years. The duo parted ways in 2021. However, in each one of his jobs, Scott has been quite vocal in giving feedback.

At the 2024 BMW Championship, he even walked away from Scheffler when he started to lose his cool. How does Scott do it without fearing for his job? This question was asked to the caddie at the Sweet Spot podcast as the host was curious about how Scott was comfortable enough to see eye-eye with pros. Surprisingly, he revealed he wasn’t anything near that, since it is usually tough. Scott thought about all his time on the course and pressed that it is a stressful environment and gets tough to read the player.

Talking about Scottie Scheffler, Scott added how he makes things easy on the course for him. He said, “Scottie makes it really easy because he is very verbal. He is a great communicator and you know we talk through shots really well.” On the other hand, he also highlighted how Watson was “much harder” to work with. Why? Scott explained, “He was more emotional. He wasn’t a great communicator. You know he didn’t love the information.” Information about hitting a shot to the right or left. He further added that he could tell such things to the PGA Tour pro but not to the LIV golfer.

But Scott wasn’t complaining about his time spent with Watson. Rather, he was revealing the different styles of his job and how it was more of an art than a science. He gave an apt example to explain his case further, Scott added that it is like tearing two kids from the same family, but their natures are different. “One holds everything in and one blabs everything”, said the veteran caddie. So, it is just about adjusting to the golfer’s behavior. Does that mean that Scott never called out Watson as he does with Scheffler? Surprisingly, no.

Yes, Ted Scott agreed that calling the golfers on their behavior on the course has its pros and downsides but in the 24 years he has spent in this profession, he has learned to be tough with whoever pro he works with. But it doesn’t imply that the veteran caddie is always harsh with the golfer. Only in certain situations does Scott let himself take the reign and put things in perspective. One such incident happened with Bubba Watson.

In 2010, before the 2-time Masters winner won the PGA Tour, Scott had an earnest conversation with him. He sat him down and told him, “I was just disappointed in his behavior on the course.” Giving the full context, the caddie explained that he was taken aback by Watson’s antics on the course, as they were far from being a role model to kids, which he wanted to be. So, he called him out and thought Watson would say, “‘You are fired!’”

To his surprise, the LIV Golf pro wasn’t offended by it. He instead told him, as Scott recalled, “He said you are absolutely right, my bad, I’m gonna work on it and that’s all I needed to hear.” The very next week, Watson won the 2010 Travelers Championship, marking his maiden victory on the PGA Tour. He was fully expecting to pack his bag and find another golfer but, “Fortunately Bubba was a great guy and said hey, you know I appreciate that, thank you, you’re right,” said Scott.
