Tiger Woods’ former coach hands harsh reality check to Ryder Cup hopeful
Ludvig Aberg has quickly shot up the world rankings after turning professional in 2023, but not everyone is convinced that the European Ryder Cup star is the real deal
Tiger Woods’ former coach Hank Haney has expressed skepticism about Ludvig Aberg’s rise to fame despite his impressive achievements in a short timeframe.
Aberg quickly made a name for himself by joining the Ryder Cup team shortly after turning pro in 2023 and contributing two points to Team Europe’s victory, including a win over Scottie Scheffler.
He then clinched his first PGA Tour win at the RSM Classic and took runner-up at the Masters in his major debut. Now ranked in the top 10 globally, Haney remains unconvinced of Aberg’s potential.
On his podcast, Haney remarked, “This Ludvig Aberg, they keep pumping him up. Every couple of years, you get a guy from Europe, and they say he is the new sliced bread. This guy could be it. He could be the sliced bread.
But the way they pump him up, let’s see him win something. I know he played good at the Masters last year and played well in some majors. He has a great golf swing.”
However, Haney pointed out Aberg’s lackluster performance at the Farmers Insurance Open, where he placed T42 with a three-over-par score, questioning, “He finished 42nd at Torrey Pines, finished 35th in strokes
“He finished 40-something in approach shots to the green, 20-something in greens in regulation and 56th in putting. And he is going to be the next great player?”
Haney is known for his outspoken views, and he didn’t hold back when discussing Rory McIlroy’s shocking final-day performance at last year’s U.S. Open.
After McIlroy’s loss to Bryson DeChambeau, Haney blamed caddie Harry Diamond, suggesting a win might have been secured with Tiger Woods’ former caddie Steve Williams carrying the clubs.
