U.S. Open-quaifiying high school teacher plays practice round with Jordan Spieth Prior to the 2024 U.S. Open,

The magic of the U.S. Open is on display once again. Colin Prater, a high school biology teacher who qualified for the prestigious tournament through the Bend, Oregon sectional, got a dream practice round partner on Wednesday – three-time major champion Jordan Spieth.

Prater, who earned one of just two spots at the U.S. Open from the Bend qualifier, isn’t your typical professional golfer. Balancing his passion for the game with a rewarding career in education, the 29-year-old exemplifies the “open” nature of the U.S. Open.

While originally scheduled to play alongside current World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, fate intervened, pairing Prater with Spieth. The two golfers discussed Prater’s unique path to the U.S. Open, a journey that balances textbooks with birdies.

“It’s surreal,” Prater said. “Being here is a dream come true, and playing alongside Jordan is just incredible. We talked about how much the game means to both of us, even though we’re at different points in our careers.”

Spieth, known for his youthful rise to golf stardom, seemed impressed by Prater’s dedication. “It’s awesome to see someone so passionate about the game achieve this level,” Spieth remarked. “Colin’s story is a reminder that anyone can qualify for the U.S. Open with the right talent and drive.”

Prater tees off in his first U.S. Open round on Thursday at 8:57 AM ET alongside Carson Schaake and Charlie Reiter. Whether he contends or not, his story is already a winner, proving that the U.S. Open truly offers a stage for golfers from all walks of life.
